VFW BACKGROUND

POST 2447 BACKGROUND

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) traces its roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service. Many arrived home wounded or sick. There was no medical care or veterans’ pension for them and they were left to care for themselves. In their misery, some of these veterans banded together and formed organizations with what would become known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.

Massanutten VFW Post 2447 was originally The Edinburg Railroad Hotel before it was made into an apartment building. The building became the home of Massanutten VFW Post 2447 on April 5th, 1932 as per our Charter.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars is an organization of U.S. war veterans, who, as military service members fought in wars, campaigns, and expeditions on foreign lands, waters, or airspace. Our Post is a place where stories are told and encouraged, and families are welcome to be part of and enjoy the camaraderie their loved ones may have developed. It’s where veterans have a place to just relax knowing that all that surround them are family. We currently have over 348 members and over 420 Auxiliary members.
